The Jazz traded their healthy center and now their star big man is hurt
Jaren Jackson Jr. is out 6-8 weeks with a torn MCL, and the Walker Kessler trade left Utah with little behind him.

Utah gave up a healthy center in the summer and now has to play without the more famous one. Jaren Jackson Jr. tore the MCL in his right knee against Memphis and will miss 6-8 weeks, which puts his return somewhere in December. The Jazz are 1-3, and the frontcourt they planned around Jackson is already thin.
What the injury changes
The news is not the worst version of it. Jackson does not need surgery, and CBS Sports reports a re-evaluation in six weeks. That keeps a full recovery on the table. It does not give Utah a quick fix, because the stretch without him covers a large share of the early schedule.
The Jazz lost that Memphis game 110-105, and Jackson played only a short stretch before leaving. The center spot he was supposed to anchor now belongs to Mo Bamba, Jaxson Hayes and Kyle Filipowski. Bamba made the most of the night with 14 points, 7 rebounds and 4 blocks. That is a useful game from a backup. It is a hard standard to build a month of rotations on.
The Kessler decision
On July 1, Utah sent Walker Kessler to the Lakers in a sign-and-trade. Kessler signed a four-year deal worth about $130 million. In return the Jazz took unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, plus pick swaps in 2028 and 2030.
That package is a bet on the future, and the front office is entitled to make it. Paying a center that much money is a real risk, and the picks give Utah options. But none of those assets help in November. The 2028 swap is two drafts away, and the firsts are five and seven years out. A team that moves a young, healthy big man for distant draft capital has to be sure the replacement stays on the floor.
Jackson cannot offer that certainty right now. The Jazz now have the star and the picks, and they do not have the player who would have covered for this injury.
What it means for the season
Utah's draft position this year depends on how long the losing lasts while Jackson sits. A 1-3 start with a depleted frontcourt points toward a rough autumn. If the Jazz stay near the bottom of the standings until December, the injury produces a better lottery chance as a side effect. If Bamba, Hayes and Filipowski keep them close, the team stays in the middle, which is the worst place for a rebuilding club to sit.
Jackson's return in December is the date to watch. A healthy Jackson by midseason gives Utah a chance to see what the roster looks like with its centerpiece. Another setback would make the Kessler trade look worse than it does today, and the Lakers would have a big man on a long contract while Utah waits on its picks.
