Write for The Subplot

The Subplot finds the story behind the score. We're looking for contributors who watch everything, check everything twice, and can explain why a result happened in fewer words than anyone else. This is a volunteer contributor role with a share of the ad money, not a salaried job.

Beats we're filling first

How the revenue share works

• You get 50% of the ad revenue your stories earn, counted from each story's page views
• A statement every month showing views and earnings for each of your stories
• Paid by Interac e-Transfer (or PayPal in the US) once your balance reaches $25
• Honest numbers: ads start once the site is approved, and a new site earns a few dollars per 1,000 readers. Your share grows with your readers
• You keep the copyright to your stories. You give The Subplot the right to publish them, and you can republish them anywhere a week after they run

What else you get

• Your byline, your own writer page and your favourite teams on The Desk
• An editor who reads every story and gives you notes
• Your best stories turned into videos on our YouTube and TikTok, with your name on them
• First call for paid work when The Subplot can pay per story

What you'll do

• Write on your beat when you have a story: the angle, not the box score
• Find the number or the decision that explains the result, and source it
• Confirm every figure at two sources before it goes to the editor
• Pitch ideas for our videos on YouTube and TikTok when a story fits

What we're looking for

• Clips, a blog, a newsletter or a Substack that shows how you write
• Deep knowledge of at least one league, and curiosity about the rest
• Clean, fast copy and comfort with stats and public data
• Students and career changers welcome
