Saskatchewan has to score more than 16 in Vancouver
Both clubs finished 10-8, and the season series shows where the West semifinal turns: BC's offence against Saskatchewan's scoring ceiling.

Saskatchewan and BC finished the regular season at 10-8, so the record separates nothing. The scoreboard from their meetings in Vancouver does. BC won 30-16 in August and 31-24 in September, and in both games the Lions got to 30 while the Roughriders sat at 16 and 24.
That is the edge to watch when the teams meet Saturday, Oct. 31, at BC Place (kickoff 1:30 p.m. PT). Saskatchewan has not shown it can win a game by outscoring BC. Its best chance is to keep the game low.
What Saskatchewan has been doing lately
The Roughriders closed the season with two wins, 16-12 over Montreal and 16-9 over Edmonton. Both ran on defence. Montreal got 12 points and Edmonton got 9. The offence landed on 16 each time, the same number it put up in BC's August win.
That total is enough against a weak opponent and thin against a team that has already reached 30 twice on this defence. Saskatchewan also lost six of the ten games before this finish, so the two wins are a short run, not a long record.
What BC has been doing lately
The Lions arrive cold. They lost 32-13 at Calgary and 34-10 against Winnipeg, scoring 13 and 10 and allowing 32 and 34. That is the reverse of what Saskatchewan did to its last two opponents.
It also sits against a stronger stretch. After a 1-5 start, BC won nine of its next ten, which is how a team that began that badly ended up hosting a playoff game. The Lions are better than their last two results, and Saskatchewan's coaches know it from film of two games they lost.
The matchup in one line
Something gives. A Saskatchewan defence that held its last two opponents to 12 and 9 meets an offence that scored 30 and 31 against the Roughriders this season. If the defence holds BC near its recent 13 and 10, the 16-point offence is enough. If BC returns to the 30 range, Saskatchewan needs to find at least a touchdown more than it managed in either loss, and nothing in the last two games suggests that is coming.
That makes the first half the place to look. A Saskatchewan lead built on field position and short fields keeps BC chasing, and a BC drive or two early puts the Roughriders in a game their offence has not won in Vancouver this year. The scoreboard, more than any single stat, will say which version of BC shows up.
