Mark Walter's reported Cadillac F1 sale puts a price on the newest team
Sportico reports that Walter wants at least $3B for his share of the grid's newest team. TWG has not confirmed it, and it denied a sale in August.

Sportico reported on Monday, in a story picked up by GPFans and Yahoo Sports, that Mark Walter is seeking to sell his ownership share in Cadillac F1 with an asking price of at least $3B. The report is unconfirmed. TWG Global, the investment group through which Walter owns the team, had not commented at the time of writing, and General Motors declined to comment.
A denial that is now in the way
In August, TWG put out a flat statement: "TWG is not considering exiting its stake in the Cadillac Formula 1 team or any other part of TWG Motorsports." Bloomberg now describes buyers circling, while noting that TWG has not agreed a deal or announced that the team is on the market. Those two positions sit badly together. Either the plan changed since August, or the August wording covered less than it appeared to.
Sportico says at least seven parties are interested, based on three sources, and names none of them. A seven-way field for a team that has yet to finish a season on the grid says something about how F1 franchises are viewed. Buyers are treating a place at the table as an asset in its own right, before the car has a results history to price.
Walter is selling elsewhere
The timing fits a pattern. Walter sold the Lakers in August to a group led by Josh Kushner and Bob Iger. In September, Clearlake Capital agreed to buy the Chelsea stakes held by Walter and Todd Boehly. Walter has said he will keep the Dodgers, and told the California Post, "We are going to keep the team no matter what." He has said nothing publicly about the F1 stake.
That leaves F1 as the one asset in his sports portfolio where a sale is rumored but nobody has said anything on the record. A man who sold two of the most recognisable franchises in world sport within a few months, and is now reported to be shopping a third, is reducing exposure. The reason has not been given.
What the ask leaves open
The $3B figure is for a share of unknown size. Sportico's report does not say what percentage Walter holds, and General Motors is a partner in the project with TWG in control. A buyer paying $3B for a minority position would value the whole team very differently from one paying it for a controlling block. Until the stake size is public, the number works as a signal of ambition more than a valuation.
For Cadillac, the practical question is control. GM brought the brand and the manufacturer backing, TWG brought the money and the day-to-day lead. If a new investor takes a large piece, the balance of that partnership changes, and so does who decides on spending, staffing and the long-term push toward a works effort.
A sale at or near the ask would also tell the other ten teams something about their own books. For now, the only firm facts are a reported price, a reported pool of bidders and a denial from three months ago. Walter, TWG or GM would have to speak before any of it becomes more than that.
