Kucherov to Toronto is a cap puzzle with one real answer

The Maple Leafs have no clean room for Nikita Kucherov, and the only salaries big enough to make the math work come with their own problems.

The Maple Leafs can fit Nikita Kucherov only by sending out a star-sized salary, and the two names that fit that description are Mitch Marner's former linemate William Nylander and the newly acquired Kirill Marchenko. That makes the idea a real trade conversation rather than a pure fantasy. It also makes it a hard one.

The room is smaller than it looks

Toronto's cap space depends on which tracker you open. PuckPedia, Spotrac and The Stanley Cap each show a different number for the same roster, and they disagree on whether the Leafs are under the cap or over it. Long-term injured reserve adds to the confusion. The practical read is that Toronto has no cushion to absorb a new top salary without sending one out.

Kucherov's cap hit is $9.5M. Any deal has to move out something close to that, plus enough to keep the roster legal after the trade.

Who could leave

Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reported that Toronto and Montreal are two teams, among many, Kucherov would consider if either offered a package Tampa Bay liked. Arthur Siegel of The Athletic wrote that a deal would likely take Nylander or Marchenko, and that the Lightning might insist on picks or prospects on top.

Nylander carries $11.5M and a full no-movement clause, so he decides his own fate. He would have to waive it to go anywhere, and Tampa Bay would be taking on a long contract for a player who is under it for five more seasons after this one. For the Lightning that is the point: they would be getting a long-term piece for a 33-year-old winger who has told the team he will not re-sign.

Marchenko is the stranger fit. His hit this season is only $3.85M, so he does not come close to matching Kucherov's number today. From 2027-28 it jumps to $12.5M. Toronto also gave up Matthew Knies, Jacob Lorentz, Andrae and a second-round pick to Columbus to land him, along with Elvis Merzlikins and Wood. Flipping him within months would undo a trade the front office just finished.

That leaves Toronto sending Marchenko plus other salary, or Nylander alone. Neither is cheap in assets, and the first option leaves the roster thin.

The contract is the bigger issue

Kucherov is in the final year of his deal and can reach free agency. He has a modified no-trade clause, which means he gives Tampa Bay a list of ten teams it can deal with. That list has not been made public, so nobody outside the room knows whether Toronto is on it.

He also told reporters on Monday that Julien BriseBois made it clear he was free to walk on July 1. He said the request was never about money, and that in four months the two sides had only two conversations. That helps Toronto in one way: a player who wants respect and communication may not need the highest offer. It hurts in another. Any team that trades for him is buying a player who has already told his club he will not re-sign, and Toronto would need to extend him quickly or lose the assets it paid.

Tampa Bay also says it has no plans to move him. BriseBois said the club has no intention of trading Kucherov. Coach Jon Cooper and the players have publicly treated him as part of the team.

The verdict

Toronto is a landing spot only if three things line up: Kucherov puts the Leafs on his list, Nylander agrees to leave or Toronto pays a prospect-heavy price for Marchenko, and Tampa Bay changes its public position. The cap math itself is solvable. The human parts are not in Toronto's hands.

Until one of those moves, the Leafs are a talking point with a workable spreadsheet behind it.
